A stellar line up of speakers has assembled as the prestigious IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2025 returns to Australia for the first time in 22 years.

The IUPESM World Congress sees the International Organisation of Medical Physics (IOMP) and the International Federation for Medical and Biomedical Engineering (IFMBE) come together to exchange cutting-edge research, explore groundbreaking innovations, and forge new collaborations in medicine and healthcare.

The triennial Congress, this year themed as Bridging the Gap: Science, Technology, and Clinical Practice for a Sustainable World, comes to Australia for just the third time in its history, being held at the Adelaide Convention Centre between 29 September and 4 October 2025.

Business Events Adelaide secured the event, with its Strategic Partner Arinex appointed as PCO following its management of the successful 2003 Congress in Sydney. It is expected to attract over 1,200 physicists, biomedical engineers and researchers - at least half of whom will be from overseas. South Australia’s Minister for Health, the Hon. Chris Picton MP, is set to open the Congress.

Adelaide based Professor Eva Bezak, the Congress Convenor of Medical Physics at IUPESM was this week awarded a Fellowship by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE). She will become President of the International Organisation for Medical Physics (IOMP) following the upcoming Congress and is set to lead IUPESM as President in 2028.

Speaking about IUPESM being in Adelaide, Professor Bezak said “Hosting the IUPESM World Congress is a tremendous honour and a milestone for Australia’s medical physics and biomedical engineering communities. Adelaide offers a dynamic environment for scientific exchange, with world-class research, innovation and healthcare infrastructure. Delegates will have the unique opportunity to participate in technical tours to leading facilities such as the Tonsley Innovation District and the Royal Adelaide Hospital, showcasing South Australia’s commitment to cutting-edge healthcare and translational research.”

Adrian Richards of Engineers Australia, Convenor, Biomedical Engineering, added “Biomedical engineering is at the heart of this year’s Congress theme - Bridging the Gap: Science, Technology, and Clinical Practice for a Sustainable World. The sessions we’ve curated showcase how innovation in biomedical engineering is transforming healthcare delivery, from AI-driven diagnostics to advanced modelling and simulation. IUPESM 2025 is a unique opportunity to connect global experts, spark collaboration, and accelerate the translation of engineering breakthroughs into clinical impact”.
